In medicine, there’s a concept we often use with our patients called bearing witness. It exists beyond just listening or holding space for suffering. But sometimes, amidst caring for others, we forget who bears witness to our own lives.
I remember a few ‘firsts’ in my day. It can be a bit intimidating to be the first to do something in the ER. What if it goes wrong? But if it has to happen, if someone has to try a new method, it might as well be me.
I’ll tell you what I tell my six-year-old niece and four-year-old nephew. This is a good teachable moment. Power does not mean credibility. Status does not mean credibility.
