Health Canada’s new front-of-package warning symbol—a small image of a magnifying glass, now required on foods with excessive salt, sugar, or saturated fat content—could reduce incidences of cardiovascular disease by helping consumers make healthier choices, researchers at Université Laval have found.In concrete terms, cutting out just 10% of the foods carrying this warning label could lead to a 20% drop in cardiovascular disease risk.“If there are ten products in your grocery cart displaying the magnifying glass icon, and you replace or remove one, simply put that means you’re removing 10%,” said study leader Jean-Philippe Drouin-Chartier, a pharmacy professor at Université Laval and a researcher at the Institute of Nutrition and Functional Foods’ NUTRISS Centre.“And in the long term, this change—according to our study—is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.”The purpose of the magnifying glass, he added, “is to raise consumers’ awareness of the saturated fat, sugar and sodium content of packaged foods, so they can make informed choices later on.”But the magnifying glass also aims to encourage food companies to improve their products “since having the magnifying glass on your packaging isn’t necessarily desirable.” “And we can already see that the nutritional value of certain foods has changed,” said Drouin-Chartier. “When possible, companies will continue to lower the saturated fat, sugar, or sodium content to the minimum threshold.”Since this symbol has only been mandatory since January, Drouin-Chartier and his colleagues conducted a computer simulation to measure its potential impact.The scientists analyzed the data and diets of 2,123 French individuals with cholesterol or blood pressure problems belonging to the CARTaGENE cohort—a population that must pay particular attention to cardiovascular risks from the outset.Of the 285 foods considered in 2011, 139 were ultra-processed, and 99 would now be subject to nutritional scrutiny: 57% were too salty, 42% too fatty and 30% too sugary. The results suggest that a 10% reduction made a difference regardless of the initial consumption level.And that's not all. The team also found that a combination of medication and dietary changes provided optimal protection because they are "complementary" approaches.While medication targets a single issue, Drouin-Chartier noted, reducing food consumption using the magnifying glass can improve cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels, all of which are risk factors for cardiovascular disease."We show that reducing food consumption using the magnifying glass and taking medication will add up to a reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease," the researcher stated. Taking medication doesn't replace nutritional changes, but diet and medication will work together to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, and the magnifying glass is therefore a simple tool that can guide choices.And even though the study focused on individuals with health problems, Drouin-Chartier said we can assume that the results are applicable to the general population.Beyond foods analyzed with the nutritional magnifying glass, the study looked more broadly at ultra-processed foods containing additives. A 10% reduction in the consumption of ultra-processed foods was associated with similar heart health benefits as an equivalent reduction in the foods analyzed with the magnifying glass.This helps fill in some of the magnifying glass's "blind spots," explained Drouin-Chartier.
