Proponents of advance requests for MAiD have long argued that patients suffering from neurocognitive illnesses should be able to consent while they’re still competent to do so, an ability they are likely to lose as their disease progresses.

The Quebec government announced last week that people who have conditions like dementia or Alzheimer’s disease will be able make a request for assisted dying before their mental capacity declines.
