In December 2009, the Ontario Legislature gave final Royal Assent to the Regulated Health Professions Statute Law Amendment Act, 2009 (Bill 179), which introduces expanded scopes of practice for 17 healthcare professionals, including pharmacists, nurses and physiotherapists. Respective regulatory bodies are developing supporting regulations that are required before providers can practice under the expanded scopes.

In March 2010, the Nova Scotia Ministry of Health proposed amendments to the Pharmacy Act that will give pharmacists the authority to order lab test, monitor drug therapy and administer injections.
