Can the pain prescribing pendulum stay in the middle?
I am sure all of you can remember our first experiences with trying to treat pain in patients. Many years ago, as a new RN, I remember more experienced colleagues telling me that if an order was written “q 3-4 h”, it was better to wait the four hours than the three. Then, of course, came the realization that for some patients this “rule” was inhumane. I suspect that many providers, both then and now, could benefit from additional educational supports to help them in caring for patients who present with pain.
