Confederation College launches pharmacy technician program

A new pharmacy technician program at Confederation College in Thunder Bay, Ont., will help alleviate the increasing demand for pharmacy technicians, particularly in northern regions. The inaugural program began in September, with 23 students enrolled. It has the capacity for 30 students, with one intake every September, says Shawna Larocque, Program Coordinator, Professor and Registered Pharmacist. “The new Pharmacy Technician Program at Confederation College in Thunder Bay is vital to our community and the broader catchment area, as it addresses a critical need for skilled pharmacy professionals in Northern Ontario,” says Larocque. Read: CSHP Manitoba to identify human resource needs for pharmacy techs“As the only program of its kind in the region, it plays a pivotal role in training local students, ensuring they are well-prepared to support healthcare delivery across our diverse and often remote communities," she says. "This initiative strengthens the healthcare infrastructure by fostering a workforce equipped to meet the unique challenges of Northern Ontario, enhancing access to essential pharmacy services where they are needed most.”The program has the option to accept both domestic and international students, notes Larocque. “International students are eligible for a post-graduate work permit.”There are currently three instructors and one technology specialist, with more starting in January, she adds. A showpiece of the program is a state-of-the-art lab that was unveiled to the public during an open house in November.
