For years, electronic medical records (EMRs) have held the promise of revolutionizing healthcare, by generating large volumes of personal health information that can be analyzed to better inform clinical decision-making, population health management and new care delivery models. But before those benefits could start to be realized, two key steps needed to happen. First, the digital infrastructure for capturing patient data had to be put in place in healthcare facilities across the country.
