Two wrongs: Doc gave diabetes meds to non-diabetic patient, failed to meet standard of care for another patient with diabetes

A Prince Edward Island doctor who prescribed diabetes medication to a patient who doesn’t have the disease also failed to provide basic medical care to another patient with Type 2 diabetes. For this combination of errors, he's been found guilty of professional misconduct and ordered to pay $30,000 in college costs. Dr. Syed Naqvi, who has a full-time family medicine practice and a walk-in clinic in Summerside, was reprimanded and sanctioned for two cases in one day, according to notices posted on the website of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Prince Edward Island. In August 2018, a local diabetes education centre confirmed that the patient’s bloodwork did not meet the criteria for a diagnosis of diabetes and also underlined the increased risk of hypoglycemia from the medications the patient had been taking. Yet even though for two years Dr. Naqvi had evidence of his misdiagnosis, he did not reassess his assumptions, according to the college. In addition to college costs, he must also complete courses in best practice guidelines for management of patients with diabetes, and medical record-keeping for a family physician. According to the college, in 2017 Dr. Navqi made an error by “inaccurately labelling” a female patient with a diagnosis of diabetes and entering this false information into her chart. He prescribed medications for diabetes and recopied the misdiagnosis into the patient’s chart for all of her subsequent visits. In his response to the complaint, Dr. Naqvi told the college he had continued to monitor the patient’s blood pressure after he took her off the high blood pressure meds, but a review of the patient’s record did not find a single blood pressure reading for this patient after the fall of 2017. The college has ordered Dr. Naqvi to pay $20,000 in investigation and hearing costs for this case. In another case, the college found that Dr. Naqvi failed to provide basic medical care for a patient with Type 2 diabetes, in numerous areas that included regular blood pressure monitoring, regular bloodwork to monitor kidney function and dyslipidemia, and referral to a podiatrist.
