One pharmacy. One health. One decision that changes everything.

When I stepped into the 84th FIP World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Montreal, I expected to learn, connect and grow. What I didn’t expect was the profound shift it would ignite in me that feels worthy of writing about, reflecting on, and sharing with the pharmacy community.FIP wasn’t just a conference. It was a career‑defining moment.I listened, learned and connected with brilliant minds from around the world. I explored the beautiful city of Montreal. And I had the honour of standing on an international stage alongside Mat DeMarco and Taylor Bertsch, giving our collective presentation titled "The Needle and Beyond" at the Global Pharmacy Technician Symposium. This is easily one of the proudest moments of my career.But the true impact of FIP wasn’t found in giving a presentation, or the sessions or the city. It was found in a revelation that came to me on the flight home.A secure base & the courage to go beyondThroughout the congress, one theme kept surfacing in every conversation: Pharmacy Technicians need guidance, belief, opportunity, community and access. They need people who see them, invest in them, and help them rise.I am who I am today because mentors poured into me, leaders opened doors, and colleagues championed my voice. My journey to an international stage is proof that success is never achieved alone.David Brooks once wrote, “Life is a series of daring adventures from a secure base.” And that is exactly what technicians need right now. A secure base of mentorship, leadership, education and support that empowers them to take daring steps into their future.FIP was one of those daring steps for me. And it was made possible because people believed in me. Because when pharmacy technicians have the support they need and deserve, they become unstoppable.The ONE choice that changes everythingThe theme of FIP this year was ONE PHARMACY. ONE HEALTH. But as I reflected on my experience, I realized something deeper:Yes, mentors matter. Yes, leaders matter. Yes, funding matters. Yes, community matters. But none of those things replace the most essential ingredient of growth:ONE person’s decision to step forward.Even when the secure base exists, the individual still has to make the first move. They have to raise their hand. They have to ask the question. They have to say yes to the opportunity. They have to show up in the room. They have to believe they belong there.The individual is the ONE at the centre of everything. Growth is never achieved passively. It is chosen. And that ONE choice of self‑leadership doesn’t just change the individual. It changes patient outcomes, it changes team dynamics, entire communities, and the global pharmacy profession itself.The future of pharmacy practice doesn’t shift because a system or workflow changes. It shifts because ONE person does.The global momentum of FIPAt FIP, I saw pharmacy technicians from around the world stepping into their power, asking bold questions, sharing expertise, advocating for their roles, and showing up with courage.I saw pharmacists championing their teams. I saw leaders elevating technician voices. I saw organizations recognizing the value we bring to patient care.Every conversation, every session, every moment of connection carried the same undertone: ONE person’s growth becomes possibility for us all.ONE PHARMACY. ONE HEALTH. isn’t just a global call to action. It’s a personal challenge.Unity begins with ONE individual who chooses to lead themselves. Progress begins with ONE person who decides to grow. Transformation begins with ONE technician who steps forward. When we put it all together, we lead healthcare into a future where patient‑first care is a unified, unwavering commitment.The Tech Effect: It starts with youYes, we need mentors. Yes, we need leaders. Yes, we need collaboration. But first, you must lead yourself.You must take the chances that come your way. You must commit to lifelong learning. You must step beyond what you thought was possible for yourself and for the profession.ONE HEALTH and ONE PHARMACY begin with ONE person. And that person must be you.This is the Tech Effect. And it all starts with you.
