The premiers met virtually Monday, nearly a week after Ottawa offered more than $46 billion to provinces and territories to augment the Canada Health Transfer.

The province is to invest more than $15 million to train and support more internationally educated nurses, like Uche Nechi, who trained in Nigeria and had to wait nearly five years before she was able to resume her career in Alberta.

The deal amounts to an additional $46 billion from Ottawa over a decade, as long as the provinces meet some conditions.

The government is also providing funding for 40 new undergraduate physician-training seats.

Margaret Melanson of Horizon Health Network says staff schedules—which often leave little room for work-life balance—are one of the main reasons causing nurses to quit.

The program, which begins in the fall of 2023, will be Canada’s first French-language pharmacy program outside of Quebec. 

Dr. Jean-René Pierre, who retired from practice in December 2021, was also the family physician for the patient’s mother and former spouse, according to the Collège des médecins du Québec.
