From new centres of excellence to a declaration on priorities when fighting AMR: FIP in a year

The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) released its annual report for 2025. Called Think Health Think Pharmacist, it provides an overview of the many areas of action this large organization took to advance pharmacy and pharmaceutical science around the world in 2025.“One of the greatest strengths of FIP is our ability to turn a shared vision into meaningful action across the globe. Every publication we produce, every policy we influence, every partnership we build and every organization and pharmacist we support contributes to improving health outcomes around the world,” said FIP president Paul Sinclair in a press release.Of note in 2025 was the formation of three new FIP-UNESCO UNITWIN Centres of Excellence. UNITWIN is the acronym for UNESCO’s (United Nation’s Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization) university twinning and network program. These new Centres of Excellence are not a place, but rather a collection of experts who work together to advance pharmaceutical education, science and practice in a particular region. The centres of excellence were already established in Africa, South East Asia and Western Pacific regions. These new centres of excellence are in Europe, in the Americas and the Eastern Mediterranean region. Lisa Dolovich of the University of Toronto is a member of the new Centre of Excellence for the Americas. Each region has a strategic road map to help guide their efforts in advancing pharmaceutical education, science and practice. The annual report also celebrates the launch of the Coffee with FIP podcast and 11 new FIP CPD Bites in 2025 (with another six so far in 2026). FIP CPD Bites are resources to support continuing professional development. The new 2025 FIP CDP Bites included topics such as hypertension management, sustainability and irritable bowel syndrome management. The report highlights the success of the 83rd annual World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, held in Copenhagen, Denmark from Aug. 31 to Sept. 3, 2025. More than 3,400 attendees from 120 countries flocked to the congress. It boasted 114 sessions and 1,100 posters. At the congress, 82 FIP member organizations signed the FIP Copenhagen Declaration on Antimicrobial Resistance which lays out priorities to combat AMR.This year, the World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science returns for its 84th year, with Montreal hosting. The congress runs from Aug. 30 to Sept. 2, 2026.
