Hang on a minute: OMA letter to CFPC asks college to take a pause on third-year family medicine residency issue

The Ontario Medical Association (OMA) is asking the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) to take a pause on implementing and voting about the addition of a third year to family medicine residencies. "The OMA, the largest medical association in Canada, representing 43,000 physicians, joins health ministers from across the country including the Hon. Sylvia Jones in Ontario, and others in calling for this pause," read a letter from John Bozzo, the OMA's CEO and Dr. Cathy Fauld, the chair of its board addressed to Dr. Christie Newton, president of the CFPC. Given the growing scarcity of family doctors, the letter asks the college to refocus away from implementing longer training to instead work on bolstering team-based care. "We also believe that a comprehensive risk-benefit analysis of the implications of a three-year family medicine residency needs to be conducted and aligned with broader physician human resources policies and planning," the Oct. 27 letter continued. The letter emphasized that the OMA is ready and willing to work on solutions to the family-doctor shortage with the college and other stakeholders.
