Display two new resources that help to rapidly diagnose and manage anaphylaxis

It can be extremely stressful when trying to quickly diagnose and manage anaphylaxis following immunization, and every second counts. To assist healthcare professionals with the rapid diagnosis and management of anaphylaxis in community settings, the Public Health Agency of Canada has developed two new visual aids. These single-page resources can be printed and posted in areas where patients are being immunized to facilitate rapid action in the event that anaphylaxis occurs.1,2 The first resource outlines the distinguishing features of anaphylaxis (skin, respiratory, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular and central nervous system symptoms) and the five steps healthcare professionals should take if they suspect a patient is experiencing anaphylaxis. A rapid response is critical. Steps 1, 2, 3 and 4 should be done promptly and simultaneously: Direct someone to call 9-1-1 (where available) or emergency medical services Assess airway, breathing, circulation Place the individual on their back and elevate lower extremities Inject epinephrine intramuscularly into mid-anterolateral thigh (refer to epinephrine dosage table2) Repeat every five minutes if not improving.1 The second resource is presented as a table that summarizes the dosage of intramuscular epinephrine 1:1000 (1 mg/mL) solution, by age or weight. It is preferrable to use weight to calculate the dose, but if weight is unknown, age can be used as a guide. The table provides doses in mg and mL of epinephrine 1:1000 (1 mg/mL) solution, as well as doses for epinephrine autoinjectors.2 The two new resources are handy summaries of key information offered in the chapter on “Anaphylaxis and other acute reactions following vaccination” found in the Canadian Immunization Guide.3 Healthcare providers in community settings should familiarize themselves with these two new resources and ensure that they are readily available in care areas where immunizations are being provided.
