Metro pharmacies will begin using the e-prescribing service PrescribeIT in all its stores by April 2023. The change will happen in both Metro and Food Basics Pharmacies.

“It just makes me very angry,” said one patient, who couldn’t get her pain medication for days.

Ontario pharmacists now have the power to prescribe for minor ailments—but some are concerned about the hurdles independent pharmacies face in implementing it. 

Patients (and politicians) will love this. But in my view, patient satisfaction should not be used as a metric to determine any healthcare policy.

But not all pharmacists will be able to offer the service immediately, with some requiring additional time to prepare and ramp up the necessary infrastructure.
