Celebrate Indigenous storytelling: recommendations from College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba is encouraging its members to set aside time to learn about First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples for Indigenous Peoples’ Day on June 21. “Embracing this day is a crucial step toward fostering Reconciliation,” the college said in a press release. The college provided a few recommendations for physicians to start exploring the diverse cultures, voices, experiences and histories of Indigenous peoples. If you take one minute, watch the Historica Canada Heritage Minute about Tom Longboat, which tells about the Onondaga long-distance runner Gagwe:gih, a name that means “everything.” If you take five minutes, read The Canadian Encyclopedia article Defining Two-Spirit. Since June is Pride Month as well as Indigenous People’s Month, this article allows you to learn more about the term “Two-Spirit.” If you take fifteen minutes, watch the National Film Board film Evan's Drum. The film centres on a seven-year-old boy and his mother who have a passion for Inuit drum dancing in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador. If you take 30 minutes or more, view the virtual exhibit Powwow! Ohcîwin The Origins. The exhibit examines and celebrates the history, artisans, regalia and dances of Powwows. The original exhibit from Red Deer, Alberta, is now touring to other museums. The college welcomes more recommendations of Indigenous podcasts, books or films. They can be sent to TheRegistar@cpsm.mb.ca. Doctors Manitoba also provided some recommendation to learn about First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples. Listen to a podcast such as: Warrior Life by Pam Palmater (each episode is about one hour long) Spirit to Soar: Where We Come From by Tanya Talaga (each episode is about 20 minutes long) Read a book such as: 21 Things you may not know about the Indian Act by Bob Joseph Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer True Reconciliation: How to be a force for change by Jody Wilson-Raybould Or other books from Indigenous voices Read: App allows Indigenous communities to collect their own health data
