AI pharmacist avatar shows promise in medication counselling for depression

An artificial intelligence-powered avatar designed to look and sound like a pharmacist may offer a new way to reinforce medication counselling for people starting antidepressant therapy, show results from a recent Canadian study. The project, led by pharmacist Adam Bleik during his primary care pharmacy residency at the University Health Network (UHN) in Toronto, explored whether AI-generated pharmacist avatars could help address a common challenge in primary care: ensuring patients leave with a clear understanding of how to take their medications and what to expect from treatment.“Medication education and adherence is a cornerstone of treatment success, yet patients often leave appointments with unanswered questions or difficulty recalling key information,” says Bleik, a primary care clinical pharmacist at the Hamilton Family Health Team in Ontario. “At the same time, healthcare professionals face increasing demands on their time, creating a need for scalable approaches to patient education that maintain quality and consistency.”In the pilot study, AI avatars delivered evidence-based education about antidepressant therapy, including treatment expectations, common adverse effects, adherence considerations and answers to frequently asked questions. Patients then completed a structured survey evaluating the credibility of the information, how well they understood it and their overall satisfaction with the educational tool.Overall, participants responded positively, reporting that the information was clear, understandable and useful. Many also appreciated being able to review the educational content at their own pace and return to it when needed. Importantly, participants consistently viewed the avatar as a supplement to pharmacist care—not a replacement.“One of the most interesting findings was that patients appeared far more receptive to AI than many healthcare professionals might assume,” says Bleik. “Rather than expressing concerns about technology replacing human care, patients recognized the potential for AI to improve access to health information while still valuing the expertise, empathy, and clinical judgment provided by pharmacists and other clinicians.”For Bleik, the study reinforces the idea that AI’s greatest value lies in supporting pharmacists rather than replacing them.Looking ahead, he believes this technology has significant potential in pharmacy, particularly for patient education. He envisions tools such as AI-powered educational platforms, virtual assistants and avatar-based resources complementing pharmacists’ counselling by providing consistent, evidence-based information while freeing clinicians to spend more time addressing patients’ individual needs.Read further study details here.
