Yukon's chief medical officer steps down, announces he's running as Liberal MP in next federal election
Dr. Brendan Hanley has served as Yukon’s chief medical officer during the pandemic and is now looking to run as the territory’s member of Parliament.
Dr. Hanley said earlier this week that effective immediately he’s stepping down from his current role to run as the Liberal candidate in the next federal election.
"I'm certainly new to politics, but I do bring some strong experience and some public recognition," said Dr. Hanley at a news conference.
Dr. Hanley has been the province’s chief medical officer since 2008.
He noted that currently the territory’s health officials are looking at a long-term response to the virus, and that the Yukon is well placed to handle the pandemic’s next phase.
As a politician, he added, he intends to focus on climate change, mental health and reconciliation.
