Saskatchewan medical students no longer need to move cities mid-degree

For the first time, University of Saskatchewan medical students can complete all four years of medical school in Regina. Previously, those wishing to study in Regina had to stay in Saskatoon for their first year and then relocate to Regina. Now, the full four years of medical school are offered by the University of Saskatchewan in both Saskatoon and Regina. Of the 100 first year medical students, 60 are based in Saskatoon and 40 are based in Regina. “We are excited to have these future physicians start their training in Regina,” said Dr. Gill White, associate dean of the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Medicine Regina campus. “This is something that we have been working toward for many years.” Medical students in Regina study at the Regina General Hospital, where they have access to classrooms and the Dilawri Simulation Centre. The Regina campus will soon include an anatomy lab, according to the university. “The expansion of medical training to be the full four years of medical school in Regina creates many benefits not only for the students but also for our clinical programs and teams,” said Dr. Susan Shaw, the Saskatchewan Health Authority’s chief medical health officer in a university press release. One of the goals of offering first year in Regina was to attract more medical students from southern Saskatchewan, a university press release said. It also meant less disruption for the first-year students wishing to study in Regina. In the third and fourth year of medical school, students gain clinical experience at various locations around the province. The new cohort of first year medical students started in Regina on Aug. 3.
