Pharmacists for a Smoke Free Canada now offers an e-cigarette nicotine estimator

In preparation for World No Tobacco Day on May 31, 2023,1 Pharmacists for a Smoke Free Canada (PSFC) President Jane Ling and PSFC Newfoundland Vice President Dr. Leslie Phillips have developed a new tool called the PSFC e-cig Nicotine Estimator.2 This tool is designed for use by individual healthcare practitioners to assist patients on their journey towards a healthier life in the areas of tobacco harm reduction and vaping cessation.2 The new tool is available on the Pharmacists for a Smoke Free Canada website under the Resources/Tools tab. The Tools section provides the following: PSFC e-cig Nicotine Estimator Form (printable pdf document, to be completed for individual patients) PSFC e-cig Nicotine Estimator (mg) Downloadable Excel Tool (form fillable online) PSFC e-cig Nicotine Estimator (%) Downloadable Excel Tool (form fillable online).2 In addition, in the PSFC Video Gallery, healthcare providers can view a 30-minute video that provides step-by-step instructions on how to use the new tool to estimate the nicotine content of e-cigarettes and how much nicotine a person is vaping daily. The video begins with a description of the various components of e-cigarette devices and what e-cigarettes look like, from first-generation to fifth-generation devices. The video also explains how e-cigarettes work and discusses their various ingredients.3 Read: Quebec government moves to ban flavoured vape products, limit nicotine content The main portion of the video is devoted to the four-step process used to calculate how much nicotine a person is vaping per day, although various factors such as user technique and genetic polymorphisms will affect the actual amount of nicotine absorbed.3 The video concludes with a case study to illustrate how the PSFC e-cig Nicotine Estimator tool can be used in practice.3 Although e-cigarettes are likely less harmful than smoking tobacco cigarettes, they are not harmless.3 References Pan American Health Organization.
