Part two: AI versus MD—Who writes a better article?

As explained in Part I of this series, this is a contest between physician writers and ChatGPT: Who writes better content for Canadian physicians?Who better than to answer these questions than you, dear Medical Post readers? I have summoned a number of esteemed physician writers to compose a brief article to put this question to the test. “How can a physician motivate a patient to lose weight? We have 12 versions of a short piece on the topic presented. So, I ask the following questions of you readers: Which content is generated by AI versus a human writer?Which of these do you prefer? Please rank them in order of most compelling to least impactful.Do you believe that open AI will enhance or eventually kill off physician writers, rendering them archaic and redundant? Here we go: ONETo motivate a patient to lose weight, a physician should first create a supportive and non-judgmental space where the patient feels comfortable talking openly about their goals and challenges. For example, they could frame healthy eating and exercise as “fueling up like a superhero” or “unlocking new levels of energy like a video game character.” Instead of focusing on pounds, they could encourage tracking “victories” like climbing an extra flight of stairs or fitting into a favorite jacket. You could also introduce a playful “health treasure hunt,” where each small, positive change (like drinking more water or walking a little further) gets the patient closer to a “hidden treasure” — perhaps a reward of their choice or a special treat. The key is to make the process feel like an enjoyable challenge rather than a chore.FOURHow can an MD motivate a patient to lose weight? A physician could start by being the patient’s biggest cheerleader—without the pom-poms, of course. It’s all about making the journey feel like a team effort, where the doctor is more of a coach and less of a drill sergeant. The key is explaining the benefits of weight loss without sounding like a broken record about “health risks” (nobody wants to hear about cholesterol for the 100th time). The goal is to keep it light, keep it positive, and remind the patient that every little step is a win (even if it’s just not finishing the entire pizza).FIVE “So it’s like this, Terry. Yeah, pills and machines and injections and wheelchairs are out there, but you could regain your svelte look and walk uphill without puffing. Girls will ask you for your phone number, not your A1c number.What do you say? Give me a year, and I will help you become half the man you are today. You’ll thank me for it, and yes I take Bitcoin. You will also live longer, and the days of your life will be happy ones, not gasping and doctor-dependent ones.”SIXHere are some delightfully nonsensical ways a physician might try to motivate a patient to lose weight:The “Unicorn Dream Diet”:“Imagine this: Every pound you lose makes you one step closer to riding a unicorn in your dreams. Now, think of the magical rainbow you’ll be galloping under with each salad you eat!”“Space Mission” Metaphor:“Your body is like a spaceship. Every extra pound is like extra cargo weighing you down. If you lose the weight, you’ll blast off into the cosmos, where zero gravity makes everything feel lighter—especially your mood.”“Superhero Training” Program:“To unlock your secret superhero powers, you need to shed those pounds. I’m talking about super strength, super speed, and the ability to resist cookies like they’re your arch-nemesis!”“Time Traveler’s Guide” to Health:“If you lose the weight, you’ll have the energy to time travel! The past is history, the future is a mystery, but right now, you can lose weight and feel like you’re on a journey to a healthier version of yourself. Who knows, maybe you’ll even meet a dinosaur on the way!”“Pirate Treasure Hunt” Approach:“Every pound you lose is like finding a golden coin on your treasure hunt. Soon, you’ll have a chest full of treasure—and maybe even a parrot who’s impressed by your healthy lifestyle choices!”“Snack Ninja” Transformation:“The more you lose, the more agile you become, like a ninja who can slip past the snack cupboard without even thinking. Your mission? Become the stealthiest, healthiest ninja around.”“Dragon-Slaying Quest”:“Every pound you lose is like slaying a dragon guarding your kingdom of health. The lighter you get, the faster you’ll be able to slay the next dragon . . . and eventually, you’ll rule the realm of wellness.”Sometimes humor and creativity can make the journey toward health feel a little more adventurous!SEVENA physician can effectively motivate a patient to lose weight by utilizing evidence-based strategies that address both physiological and psychological factors. Research indicates that a collaborative, patient-centered approach is key to long-term weight management. Physicians should start by building a strong therapeutic alliance, which fosters trust and promotes open communication. This is crucial for patient adherence to weight loss recommendations (Haase et al., 2013). Providing clear, tailored information about the health risks of excess weight and the benefits of weight loss—such as improved cardiovascular health, reduced risk of diabetes, and enhanced quality of life—can motivate behavior change (Wing & Phelan, 2005).Setting small, specific, and achievable goals has been shown to enhance motivation and prevent feelings of overwhelm (Linde et al., 2006). Encouraging incremental lifestyle changes, such as dietary improvements and increased physical activity, rather than drastic alterations, helps promote sustainable weight loss. We’ve talked about your body mass index before, how it’s been creeping up over the years, and you are now officially obese! “A little overweight” no longer cuts it. We’ve danced around this for a few years, Bill, and it’s time to change the music. Your blood pressure is 142/90, which gets you a diagnosis of hypertension, and the A1c was 6.0, which means you’re pre-diabetic. It’s all coming together, and not in a good way. We’ve talked about weight management before, Bill, and you’ve talked about exercise like it’s the answer. Exercise is always good, but in terms of weight control, the best exercise is pushing away from the table. Before we get into some strategies that will help you lose some weight, I gotta be frank. The odds are stacked against you. I’m not saying it’s impossible to lose weight. It can be done, but keeping it off is a challenge. So this is going to take work and determination. We’re not talking about a six-month weight loss program here, we’re talking about a profound difference in the way you live your life, what you put in your mouth and how you use your body. Our modern environment encourages us to gain weight. Fast foods and processed foods are engineered to provide lots of calories, little nutrition, and be fiendishly tasty. You sit at a desk all day, you get no regular exercise, and your home is full of labor-saving devices. I understand why you haven’t had any success in losing l weight. It’s only going to get harder as you age and your metabolism slows down.I know I sound like a Debbie Downer here, but I don’t want to set you up for failure That would only make you eat more. There are no easy fixes, Bill. You’ve probably read about drugs like Ozempic, and while many people have lost weight on Ozempic, it costs about $1000 a month, and your insurance doesn’t cover that. It also doesn’t get you the benefits you’ll get from changing to foods.Is this a challenge you’re up to? Go home and think about why losing weight would be important to you. What concerns do you have about your health? Are you ready to make major changes in your life and stick to them? I have lots of ideas that will increase the chances that you’ll be successful, but it’s going to be a long and slow slog, and will involve changes you will have to maintain for the rest of your life. Here are a couple of suggestions that you can try out for starters. One, no calories after dinner until breakfast the next morning. The second is to go for a 20-minute walk after dinner. I’m not even asking you to do it every day to start. Maybe two or three times a week, more if you’re really keen. Make an appointment to see me in about a month, and we’ll review your options. I am committed to helping you to lose weight and keep it off. However, you’re the one that will be doing the heavy lifting,. I’ll be here to show you the way, but you’re gonna have to do the work. I know you can do it, Bill. You quit smoking four years ago, and that’s a huge challenge. You’ve got what it takes. See you in a month.ELEVENPhysicians can inject humor into weight loss motivation by making the process feel like a fun and quirky mission. For example, they could say:“Let’s make your scale so confused, it won’t know what to do!” – Encouraging the patient to mix things up with different exercises and healthy foods to keep things fresh and exciting.“Think of your body as a high-performance car — we need to swap out the junk food fuel for premium-grade veggies.” – Framing the weight loss journey like upgrading to a “fancy” version of yourself.“Want to know the secret to weight loss? It’s not magic — it’s moving more than your Netflix remote.” – Lightheartedly nudging the patient to be more active.“We’re not just losing weight, we’re evicting your belly fat tenants!” – Using playful language to reframe weight loss as a fun project.“Let’s get you to your goal weight so that when you walk into a room, even the mirror will say, ‘Wow!’” – A cheeky way to boost self-esteem and add humor to the process.By combining humor with encouragement, physicians can make the weight loss journey feel less daunting and more enjoyable, helping patients feel motivated without the pressure.TWELVEHere are some inspirational quotes that a physician can use to motivate a patient on their weight loss journey:“Every small step you take brings you closer to the healthiest version of yourself.
