The Canadian Medical Association is calling for an urgent update to Canada’s plan of action to tackle its part in contributing to global climate change.

“While the Canadian Medical Association has supported Canada’s previously stated commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, we believe more needs to be done,” read a release from CMA president Dr. Ann Collins. “We are therefore committing to be a full participant in the development and implementation of a comprehensive and robust plan to prevent further climate change and address the health consequences that are already affecting Canadians.”

The CMA noted Canada’s plan going forward must include a preparation and adaptation strategy set to respond to challenges to health and health systems that are already happening and will come in the future; enhanced commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; a clear and detailed path to a net-zero health system and overall economy; and actions to protect and prioritize the health of those vulnerable and marginalized cohorts, including rural and remote populations.

“Tackling the climate crisis is a significant and necessary opportunity to improve the health outcomes of Canadians today and in the future,” said Dr. Collins. “We must put health considerations at the heart of our climate change responses.”
