The move, first announced last year, makes Canada the first country in the world to take that step aimed at helping smokers quit the habit.

They can affect key proteins that the virus uses to replicate.

In September, Imperial Tobacco Canada, the Canadian subsidiary of British American Tobacco, was awarded the “Great Place to Work” certification, one of the leading authorities on workplace culture.

"Providing anti-smoking messages and assistance at the point of purchase and access to professional counselling immediately at the point of purchase, is the only way we can help our customers reduce tobacco use," says chief operating officer Clint Mahlman.

A petition organizer is trying to change this. Leo Lavasseur said pharmacies shouldn't be profiting from cigarette sales while getting tax dollars for cessation programs and aids.

New Zealand is proposing a unique approach to stopping smoking. With legislation, which would come into effect in 2027, anyone born after 2008 will not be able to buy cigarettes in their lifetimes.

Smokers will soon see their cigarette packs stripped of logos and distinctive designs as federal rules make drab brown the default colour for tobacco brands next week.
